Hindleap House Annex

East Sussex, 2021 – 23

Secluded within the Ashdown Forest, the site of this project was occupied by a timber stable block, which had been used for storage and as a shelter for a few chickens. The brief was to convert the stables into multi-functional ancillary facilities for the main house.

Given the strict planning constraints of the conversion, we retained the existing footprint and overall volume of the stables with a considered design approach that preserved the character of the agricultural structure.

The plan comprises a series of rooms arranged around a central courtyard. Multiple bifold doors create a visual connection between the shared use spaces, with slate flooring continuing seamlessly between the inside and outside. Whereas, the more private rooms are orientated to face out to the view of the countryside. A new primary structure was inserted, which allowed for a flexible arrangement of internal walls. The exposed softwood rafters appear to float above ridge beam, with the contractor’s carpentry skill particularly showcased in the ceilings of the gym and office.

The material palette was intentionally kept small to create continuity throughout the building. The lighting scheme combines high-level and ambient lighting, with LEDs integrated into custom-made furniture, providing further flexibility in how the spaces are used.
